It’s no secret that new construction in the PNW is fintail’s absolute favorite style of modern architecture. But today I give to all of you the typical “stackable” looking home... only UN stacked!

Marvel in it’s Bigly big footprint of bigliness.

its like they showed up the the “architect’s” office with 5 photos of different buildings and said their house needed to look like all of them.

I dislike everything I see here.

Well, to be nice, I like it when the underside of eaves are finished/stained rather than painted wood. Otherwise, big pile of nope.  The gable area and the windows really kind of irk me.  You have all this money, and this is what you choose?  I don’t get the mcmodern thing.

I don’t want to offend anyone who likes this (I didn’t scroll down to review just in case this time), but I don’t find anything at all redeeming in this design. I think it’s lazy lego  architecture.  Might as well put a bunch of manufactured units together.

If I had stayed in Madison, I would’ve liked to buy one of the many not-crazy-expensive legit mid-century modern houses there. I love mid-century style up through 70s contemporaries. It was neat in that there were a good number of architect-designed homes built there in the 50s & 60s that have character and have been maintained, but they’re reasonably sized and not too much more expensive than the city overall.

Here in DC, the true mid-century homes like that are few and far between, as it wasn’t really a style that took hold out in the suburbs here at that time. There are a smattering of subdivisions with 70s contemporaries though, including the subdivision directly next to the one where I grew up (which is standard 80s colonial-style). None for sale right now for me to show as an example, but here’s a street view. The houses in that neighborhood are about 2700-3500 sq ft.

Kinja'd!!!

I did find these couple of sorta transitional modern/contemporary houses built in the 60s.

Most of the 70s contemporaries tend to be on the bigger side, and not cheap. Like this , this , this or this . Or this crazy cinder block bunker built into the side of a hill.

Some of those are quite nice. And nice to see prices there are as wacky as here - I guess the techdorks and offshore-sourced money launderers here are as cash flush as those involved with the Federal cash cow there.

I like a lot of prewar 20th century material, but have warmed up to postwar houses. This area has a decent supply of nice 50s-70s contemporary material, but a lot of it is being lost, as new money wants more square footage, and there is very little preservationist movement here. For new   builds, we have a few prevalent styles - mcmodern, faux craftsman, faux Tuscan, faux farmhouse, faux chateau.

A few recent sales of nice looking period houses in my area (I am too lazy to make pretty links):

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/8612-NE-14th-St-Clyde-Hill-WA-98004/48748280_zpid/

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/10050-SE-16th-St-Bellevue-WA-98004/48675784_zpid/

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2715-106th-Pl-SE-Beaux-Arts-WA-98004/48681587_zpid/

I saw this one before the recent flippers got it - it was very original and attractive (cedar siding) a couple years ago when it hit the market in an estate sale. Now they’ve done a pretend update to it, and it’ll probably be knocked down and replaced by a box:

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/80-Cascade-Ky-Bellevue-WA-98006/48980528_zpid/

And one of my favorites of the 70s, with a more palatable selling price, this crazy train:

https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/492-McNary-St_Independence_OR_97351_M19574-16148#photo0

I think I’d just change some floor coverings, that’s it. Price fall off quickly once you get south of Portland.

If you think something an art nerd cobbled together out is outrageous. You should see what authentic factory fittings go for. Not just fittings either. Carts, clocks, anything that one day served an actual purpose

Seattle market defenders use a similar line, but sometimes they fail to see that this isn’t a city in the same league as those - without tech, this is more of a provincial outpost. But thanks to techdrones , unvetted foreign money, and Californicators, the local market is crazy even when it slows.

At least DC is the capital of a superpower with the associated hordes of well-paid management types, sometimes crooked NGOs by the dozen, profiteers and rich defense contractors, etc.

I work for a federal IT contractor. DoD and other agencies. The industry is held together with duct tape, finding people with security clearance and the tech  certifications arbitrarily determined by the government to be necessary to perform certain jobs, proposals where companies like mine tell the government they’ll do that finding of people, which they demonstrate by finding people who won’t necessarily end up taking the job months down the road when the government finally awards the work, bungee cords, and a few too many 6-figure salaries. But hey, I rent a townhouse in a neighborhood tucked into the side of a country club right in the middle of my corner of the burbs, where they typically sell for sums in the oh-so affordable low-mid-$500k range. I guess you could say the American taxpayer covers my rent.

You’re probably not working for Blackwater or are a tenured 61  year old middle manager with a six figure salary and an insane pension just around the corner :)

I live in an area where the average salary is around 80K, and the average detached house is over 1MM. Suffice it so say, I won’t have one of those around here.

I asked my FIL about just that thing and he had a bunch of random reasons, none of which I believed.

Why do so many houses up here have what appear to be unfinished eaves? They’re just left open, painted, and you can usually see things like nails and screws sticking out under them. Even the shitty houses my parents have owned in other places put in some effort to close these. Hell, the post-war houses they threw up in a handful of days each that I grew up in down in Los Angeles had better finished eaves than modern houses in this area...

09/19/2018 at 14:09

Kinja'd!!!1

I actually like this light fixture, railings, and skylight, but the rest is a little too chaotic for my tastes. It wouldn’t be bad if they used the same wood siding everywhere or that light colored stuff everywhere (although there is too much weird blocking going on), but mixing all of these is ugly.

Kinja'd!!! fintail > Eric @ opposite-lock.com
09/19/2018 at 14:23

You rarely see boxed gable ends here, I don’t know why. Finished eaves are also not a guarantee. You see those much more in other areas, especially where animals might get in under the eaves, I think.

My grandma lives in a mid century rambler, a decent quality place with a typical hipped roof, and finished eaves that were a stained wood (the house was pastel light seafoam green when it was built, gotta love the era). When she had it painted back around 2005, they pained over the stained wood, which really irked me, but too late now.

Except this is a legitimate style trend in the PNW. I describe it as PNW Modern. They’re built like garbage, usually, because just about everything here is built like garbage. The local culture is all about the boom/bust cycle, with nobody bothering to build anything for the long term.

Porches are for keeping the rain off that falls nearly constantly for 9+ months of the year. Letting light through it to brighten that area is pretty practical.
